A blog about teaching and learning in a maths classroom.

Each year, we review the four basic operations with Year 7. We don’t re-teach, because they would have already developed a method in primary school. So, for each operation, we mind map different methods for solving a couple of different problems.
Each year I learn a new method of addition which allows a year 7 student to add 2 three digit numbers quicker than me – I’m so jealous.
The silly thing is, my university teaching course didn’t teach the people training to be teachers, who were taught algorithm methods only, any of these new ways.
